scriptural literature are called as Sankardev Geet, Shankardev Baadya, Shankardev Saahityaa etc. Therefore the creations or compositions of Shankardev are unitedly defined as Shankardev Sanskritee. But traditionally it is known also as Shankaree Sanskritee or Shankaree Culture.
The songs composed by Shankardev are known as Shankaree song or Shankardev song. Shankaree songs are of two types, Bargeet and ankeeyaageet. He composed thirty five numbers of Bargeets and one hundred forty four numbers of ankeeyageet. He composed the Bargeet (Classical song) and Ankeeyaageet (Classical songs for dramas) in Brajabuli language. Brajabuli language is known in asam as Brajaavalee and in other states as brajabuli or brajabhaashaa. This differentiation is only due to pronunciation. Shankardev composed different time specific raagas for his Bargeet and ankeeyaa geet. He mentioned specific taala (rhythm) for his classical songs
which he composed for ankeeyaa dramas. He kept open the option for the singer to select rhythm to make the specific Bargeet lucid to listen. The Bargeet and ankeeyaa geet (ankeeyaa songs) are classical songs. Each song comprised of two parts i.e. Dhrung and Pada. Shnakardev composed different ragas and these are vaayumandal, timir, Meghamandal, ahir, gour, tur-basant, Maahur, dhanashree, shree, aashovaaree, kalyaan, kedaar, suhaai, shyaam etc. The rhythm created by Shankardev for use in his songs are paritaal, domaani, ektaal, barjyoti, dharamjyoti, rupak, bishamjyoti, kharmaan, rachak, aatholaa, obhataa aatholaa, rupganja, maath jyoti, oonjyoti, saru jyoti etc. Generally one Bargeet is sung in one rhythm. But Shree Golaap Mahanta, one of the specialists of shankaree-song, mentioned in his book “Bargeet Mukur” that on principle more than one rhythms can be used during performance of one Bargeet in order to add sweetness and lucidity in listening. Shankaree songs are performed in bilambit (slow) and madhya laya (medium rhythm). Shankaree songs are saturated with the characteristics & feelings of friendship, subservience, devotion, love in devotion to Krishna etc. The basic characteristics on which the classical song is based are raag, taal (rhythm), laya (motion) and bhaava (feelings). Due to presence of the four above cited characteristics, the Bargeet and ankeeyaa geet are well acknowledged as the Indian classical song with highest quality. Shankaree Dance (Shankardev Dance)- The dance created by Shankardev is known as Shankaree dance. Aangik, vaachik and aahaarya are the three types of acting on which the Shankaree dance is based. Shankardeyv, the cultural and religious preceptor, created sixty four numbers of Maati-aakharaa (karan). Two or more maatiaakharaa form one complete dance. The Shankaree dances are Shisu-Krishna dance, Gosaai dance, Chaali dance, Jhumuraa dance, Gopee dance, Dashaavataar dance etc. Sootradhaaree Dance – Shankardev created the character “Sootradhaar” in his ankeeyaa drama.
