Guru Nanakdev (1469-1538 A.D.) – Mahaapurush Guru Naanakdev was born in India in the state of Panjaab. He did not keep faith in incarnations. He was monotheist and he accepted the philosophical and analytical meaning of the name Krishna. Therefore he advised to search the knowledge about God in Sat-chit-aanand. He stated that God is formless, colourless and omnipotent. He confered in his doctrine that the God should be worshipped only by praying.
The religious duty of human race is to listen & sing the glory of ‘Ohe-Guru’. Establishment of religious philosophy – He established the Shikh religion. Composition of scriptures : He composed the scripture ‘Guru-Granth-Saahib.’ Contribution to India Culture – Did not compose any classical songs, drama etc.
Swaamee Vivekaananda – He was born in the year 1863 A.D. and lived for about thirty eight years of age. Primarily he kept faith in gyaanvaad. But it is to be mentioned that he could not protest directly against the taboos and superstitious traditions of Hinduism. The superstitious traditions are idol worship, braahminised ritual etc. Once, he was asked by his disciple at Belur math that whether human being can get salvation by worshipping idols. Then vivekaananda replied in the following way –
“Image worship can not directly give mukti; it may be an indirect cause, a help on the way. Image worship should not be condemned, for, with many, it prepares the mind for the relisation of the advaita, which alone makes man perfect.” (Complete works of Swaamee Vivekaananda, Page No. 388)
Raamkrishna Paramhangsadev was the religious preceptor of Vivekaananda. As Raamkrishna Paramhangsadev was the worhipper of “Mother Kaalee”, therefore Vivekaananda could not state the doctrine clearly against idol worship. Swaamee Vivekaananda composed a poem named “Kali (Kaalee) the mother” by addressing the goddess Kaalee. He mentioned in his different compositions that “the Kaalee” is the cause for nurturing and dstruction of all. Therefore, from the point of sagun-Bhakti, he was the devotee of goddess kaalee and on the basis of analysis of vedaanta & other articles composed by him, it can be stated that he was the follower of gyaanvaad. Yoginee tantra and Kaalikaa puraan are the taantrik scriptures which deal about goddess Doorgaa and Kaalee and these type of scriptures are included in aagam scriptures.
Swaamee Vivekaananda mentioned in his article ‘Vedaanta Philosophy’ that the ‘Purush’ (aatmaa) of saankhya philosophy is the supreme soul of vedaanta or upanishad. Vedaanta is the part of Veda which deals with the gyaanyog. He said –
“The Vedanta and Sankhya Philosophy are very little opposed to each other. The vedanta God developed out of the Sankhya’s ‘Purusha’. All the systems take up the psychology of the sankhya. Both the vedanta and sankhya believe in the infinite soul.”
