35) Shree Shree Shankardev, as I feel, was not only a religious leader but also a great social reformer at a time when caste and class system prevailed and the common man had to suffer a lot in the name of religion, a literary genius, a great painter, a playwright, a composer of devotional songs (Borgeet) and creator of Ankiyaa Bhaaonaa (play with stories with a message of victory of the Good over the Devil) and creator a satriya Dance to the tune of the Khol (a musical instrument also of his creation) all of which play a great role in the life of the Assamese people.
The philosophy of the religion of shree shree Shankardev, to me, is universal brotherhood, non-violence, a casteless and classiess society and faith in one supreme creator who is kind to all and to submit completely to him. Vaishnavism, as preached by Shree Shree Sankardev is, as I understand, more a way of life rather than a religion. It teaches us as to how to lead a simple life in society devoid of caste and class, being kind not only to human being but also to animals and plant kingdom & to submit completely before one god-the Supreme Power – without going for elaborate rituals to please different gods and goddesses.

36) On the basis of the greatest epic of Gita and Bhagavata, Sankardeva preached “Ek Sharan Hari Naam Dharma” for physical, mental and spirtual upliftment of the mass people as well as reorganised the Assamese society. In his endeavour to establish a noble and human society on the basis of ‘Ek Sharan Hari Naam Dharma” the treasure of literature, songs, dramas and art he had created are always glittering, ever lasting and immortal, Sankardeva’s preachings were his only weapons in the war against casteism, untouchability, idolatry and animals sacrifice prevailling in the mediaval Assam and today again in the twenty first century, it is felt that the degradation in social values and principles brought about by the growing materialistic aspirations of individuals, Mahapurush Sankardeva’s creations and ideologies are the only way out to reestablish human values in the society.
